From complexity to observability using OpenTelemetry

Understanding the behavior of modern applications can be challenging because they are built using many components that interact with each other. Starting with an application deployed using containers and serverless functions, we use OpenTelemetry to instrument and collect telemetry data such as traces and metrics. Then, we visualize telemetry data to gain insight into the running system, detect anomalies, troubleshoot issues, and perform root-cause analysis. Through this end-to-end example, you will learn how to build observable applications.

Migrating your security mindset to the cloud

In the days prior to cloud computing, network security was often enforced at the perimeter, designating all actors external to the network as untrusted, and those inside the network as trusted.
Migrating to the cloud means that this approach is no longer suitable, nor effective at protecting platforms and data. One of the biggest migrations that needs to occur, is the mindset of the organization. One must change how they think about network perimeters, data security and identity. Application developers need to migrate their development practices to be cloud native and secured within perimeters they do not control. How can this be achieved? Ephemeral secrets and data encryption.
In this demo-driven talk, I will show you how you can use HashiCorp Vault’s API to refactor a simple application to secure access to its underlying database and encrypt its data in transit and at rest. In just a few lines of code, I will demonstrate how an application can obtain a short-lived credential for the database, and encrypt / decrypt the data without the management overhead of implementing cryptography.
By the end of this talk, you will learn how to implement symmetric and asymmetric encryption of your application data before writing it to the database. You will also learn how to implement this workflow using Format Preserving Encryption (FPE).

AWS Lambda has become an iconic figure in the serverless world. And with event-driven asynchronous architectures becoming increasingly mainstream, knowing what Lambda can do for us when working with various event sources is becoming exceedingly important. Not only that but understanding why it works the way it does is crucial when building production-ready applications. During this talk, we get to know the hidden hero behind AWS Lambda, the Event Source Mapping (ESM). We use the example of Amazon Kinesis Data Streams to see what Lambda and ESM can do to help build more scalable, reliable & sustainable event-driven applications. There will be plenty of tips and best practices, based on firsthand experience building large-scale serverless event-driven architectures. Together we will see how ESM can help to increase processing speed, optimize costs, spare unnecessary invocations and, of course, help you deal with inevitable failures.

Micro-Frontends: The Evolution of Frontend Architecture

Have you ever wondered what’s the difference between monoliths, monorepos and Micro-Frontends?
When facing issues with scale, large companies turn to Micro-Frontends as a solution to decouple the monolith and hopefully improve their velocity and increase team autonomy; however, Micro-Frontends are at the far end of the decoupled and distributed frontend spectrum, and many alternatives should be considered first before committing to a fully distributed architecture.
This talk is a journey through the evolution of frontend applications at scale, starting from the Monolith, evolving to modular monoliths, integrated applications, monorepos and finally arriving at Micro-Frontends. We will explore each approach’s pros and cons and choose the best tool to help you scale your applications.

Improving Content Retrievability in Search with Controllable Query Generation

In online content platforms, users can search for catalog entities that they are already familiar with, for example, they issue queries with the title of a track to listen to next or of a book they would like to read. This type of search based on bibliographic data (e.g. title, artist, author, etc) to find entities [7] has been referred to as narrow intent queries [27]. However, user information needs are diverse and can be more complex depending on their current mindset.

In this case, we study the effect of generating queries on the retrievability of the system.
